"Living in a Nightmare": Family Mourns Welsh Man Who Died in Tragic Fall in Malta

St Julian’s, Malta – July 2025

The family of a 25-year-old man from Gwynedd, Wales, who died after falling from a hotel balcony while on holiday in Malta, say they are “living in a nightmare” as they come to terms with the shocking loss.

Kieran Thomas Hughes, a beloved son and twin brother, was on a trip with friends when the tragic incident occurred at a hotel on Triq Spinola in St Julian’s, on Malta’s east coast, last Friday.

His father, Alan Hughes, spoke emotionally to Newyddion S4C, saying:

“He was a special son and twin brother… The situation is unbelievable.”

Circumstances Under Investigation

Details surrounding the fall remain unclear. Maltese authorities are conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, while North Wales Police have confirmed they are supporting the family.

“We are assisting in supporting the man’s family and liaising with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office,” a spokesperson for the force said. “The coroner has been notified.”

A Devastating Loss

Tributes have begun pouring in on social media from friends and community members in Gwynedd, many remembering Kieran as kind-hearted, adventurous, and deeply loved.

A family friend posted: “He brought joy wherever he went. This is an unimaginable loss for all who knew him.”

Foreign Office Support

The UK Foreign Office said it is providing consular assistance to the family during this difficult time. “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Malta and are in contact with the local authorities,” a spokesperson said.

A Community in Mourning

The tragedy has rocked the small Welsh community where Kieran was raised, with many expressing shock that a life so full of promise could be cut short so suddenly.

A memorial page has been set up online to celebrate his life, and the family has asked for privacy as they grieve.
