A Historic Win for Backstedt
Britain’s Zoe Backstedt produced a commanding performance to win the under-23 time trial at the Road World Championships in Rwanda, taking the rainbow jersey and gold medal in style.
The 20-year-old crossed the finish line one minute and 51 seconds ahead of Slovakia’s Viktoria Chladonova, while Italy’s Federica Venturelli claimed bronze.
A Brutal Kigali Course
The 22.6km circuit around Kigali featured two major climbs, including a punishing cobbled ascent, which tested the endurance of all competitors. Backstedt, the pre-race favourite, maintained her composure and accelerated strongly in the final stretch, leaving rivals far behind.
Men’s Event Results
In the men’s under-23 time trial, Sweden’s Jakob Soderqvist delivered a powerful ride to win by one minute and four seconds over New Zealand’s Nate Pringle, with Britain’s Callum Thornley finishing in fifth place.
Backstedt’s Reaction
Speaking after her victory, Backstedt described the route as “brutal” but thrilling:
“The climb at the end — your legs are tired and you look up and think, ‘this one’s going to hurt.’ It took so much energy out of your arms, legs, and body on all those bumps.”
With temperatures reaching 26°C in humid conditions, she was immediately cooled down with icy water after her race.
Family Legacy in Cycling
Backstedt, who competes for Canyon-Sram Zondacrypto, continues a proud family tradition. She is the daughter of Magnus Backstedt, winner of the 2004 Paris-Roubaix, and sister of Elynor Backstedt, who rides for UAE-ADQ.
