Fritz Clinches Title Against Zverev

Taylor Fritz, inspired by the courtside presence of tennis legend Andre Agassi, delivered a commanding performance to defeat Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) and secure a 15-9 win for Team World over Team Europe in the Laver Cup in San Francisco.

Team World Seals Third Laver Cup Triumph

Team World entered the match with a 12-9 lead, leaving Zverev — the world number three — with the chance to draw the contest level. However, Fritz, ranked world number five, held his nerve to close out the tie and clinch the overall title. This marks Team World’s third Laver Cup victory, following their back-to-back successes in 2022 and 2023.

Agassi’s Energy and Team Spirit as Motivation

Fritz credited the team atmosphere and the motivational presence of captain Andre Agassi, who provided constant energy and encouragement from the sidelines. “It was impossible not to give everything on court with my teammates’ energy and a legend like Agassi cheering me on,” said Fritz. He added that the team planned big celebrations, joking about “popping champagne” in the locker room.

Earlier Matches Keep Europe’s Hopes Alive

The final day saw plenty of drama. Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud won a doubles match against Alex Michelsen and Reilly Opelka to cut the deficit, before Alex de Minaur restored Team World’s lead. Alcaraz then kept Team Europe in contention with a win over Francisco Cerundolo, but Fritz’s decisive victory sealed the contest against the Yannick Noah-led European squad.

Looking Ahead to London 2026

The next edition of the Laver Cup will be staged at the O2 Arena in London from 25–27 September 2026, where Team Europe will aim to reclaim the title.
