OSLO, NORWAY — A Norwegian court has concluded that there was insufficient evidence to convict renowned athletics coach Gjert Ingebrigtsen of claims made by his Olympic champion son, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, alleging a childhood marked by violence, fear, and intimidation. While Gjert was cleared of the most serious allegations raised by Jakob, the court did find him guilty in a separate incident involving his daughter, Ingrid Ingebrigtsen. During a family dispute in 2022, Gjert struck Ingrid, now 19, in the face with a towel—a physical assault that was supported by sufficient evidence.

As a result of the ruling, Gjert, 59, received a suspended 15-day prison sentence and was fined 10,000 Norwegian Kroner (approximately £745). This sentence is notably lighter than the two-and-a-half years of jail time initially sought by prosecutors.
