New School Approved to Support 180 Autistic Pupils in Huddersfield

Plans have officially been approved for a purpose-built school in Huddersfield designed specifically to support the educational needs of up to 180 autistic pupils.

Woodley School and College to Relocate to Almondbury

Woodley School and College, currently based at Dog Kennel Bank, will relocate to a new facility on Fernside Avenue in Almondbury. The move marks a major step forward in expanding and improving support for young people with autism in the Kirklees area.

A Modern, Inclusive Learning Environment

Kirklees Council says the newly designed building will provide a more suitable and inclusive environment for children and young people aged 5 to 19 years old. The goal is to enhance access to high-quality specialist education within the local community and reduce the need for out-of-area placements.

Leadership Praise for the Project

Jane Rylah, cabinet member for education at Kirklees Council, praised the development, calling it an important milestone in improving education provision for autistic pupils.
She stated:

“This project will deliver a tailored environment where pupils can thrive and reach their full potential.”

Investment in Specialist Education

The relocation reflects ongoing efforts by the council to invest in facilities that meet the diverse needs of students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The new school is expected to be equipped with features that support both learning and well-being, including quiet zones, sensory rooms, and outdoor spaces adapted for therapeutic use.
