India Urges British Universities to Expand Presence

India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, has called on British universities to open campuses in India, encouraging stronger academic collaboration under India’s transformative National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The appeal was made at a special education collaboration event held at India House in London.

Six Leading UK Universities Sign Letters of Intent

At the event, six UK universities—University of Southampton, University of Liverpool, University of York, Newcastle University, Coventry University, and Queen’s University Belfast—signed Letters of Intent to establish campuses in India. This milestone reflects growing enthusiasm for academic partnerships between the two nations.

Southampton Leads the Way with Delhi Campus Launch

The University of Southampton will become the first foreign university to officially open a campus in India, with the launch of its Gurugram (Delhi Capital Region) campus scheduled for this week. The campus will initially offer four undergraduate and two postgraduate programmes, with plans to expand student enrolment to over 5,500 by 2035.

Professor Mark E. Smith, president and vice-chancellor of the university, said the initiative evolved from conversations held just two years ago and is now a full-fledged project in motion.

India’s Educational Potential and Challenges

High Commissioner Doraiswami emphasized that India’s strong cultural emphasis on education, combined with regulatory reforms, creates a fertile ground for international academic investment. However, he also acknowledged persistent challenges such as extremely high university entry cut-offs and the urgent need for expanded higher education capacity.

Doraiswami highlighted that while India has the financial capital to build infrastructure, capacity-building at scale requires global collaboration, especially from UK institutions.

Industry-Aligned Learning and Innovation Hubs

Professor Andrew Atherton, vice-president for international engagement at Southampton, stressed the advantages of India’s scale, ambition, and regulatory openness. He revealed that the university is partnering with companies like Deloitte and Investec to align academic offerings with industry demands, aiming to foster innovation and practical learning.

Plans are also underway to establish innovation hubs, faculty and student exchanges, and joint research programmes, further enhancing academic links between the UK and India.

Wide-Ranging Participation and Future Prospects

The event drew representatives from the UK Department for Education, the British School, and the NHS, highlighting the cross-sectoral interest in boosting UK–India educational partnerships.

With the University of Southampton paving the way, other British institutions are expected to follow suit, turning intent into action in the coming months and years.
