A night out in Los Angeles turned into a scene of chaos and bloodshed early Saturday morning when a car plowed into a line of people waiting outside a nightclub on Santa Monica Boulevard, injuring at least 30 people — five of them critically.
The incident occurred just after midnight, when a Nissan Versa veered off the road and slammed into a crowded sidewalk area, striking a taco truck, valet stand, and dozens of partygoers, most of whom were women waiting to enter the club.
According to LA Fire Department spokesperson Captain Adam VanGerpen, one of the victims was found with a gunshot wound, indicating the event may not have been accidental. “This is a large-scale emergency incident and an active investigation,” he said.
Driver Beaten, Then Shot
Witnesses told police that after the vehicle came to a halt, bystanders pulled the male driver from the car and began assaulting him. During the altercation, the driver was shot. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the shooting was connected to the crash or a separate act of violence.
The suspected shooter was described by the LAPD as a Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing around 180 pounds, bald, wearing a blue jersey, and possibly armed with a silver revolver. He fled the scene on foot and is currently being sought by police.
Scene of Devastation
Images and videos from the scene, circulating on social media, show debris, shoes, and personal items scattered across Santa Monica Boulevard. Emergency responders set up triage zones as they treated the injured and transported them to local hospitals and trauma centers.
“It was pandemonium,” said one eyewitness. “People were screaming, helping those on the ground. There was blood, broken glass, and people running in all directions.”
Captain VanGerpen confirmed that partygoers and staff from the nightclub rushed outside to assist the wounded before emergency crews arrived.
Multiple Crime Scenes, One Ongoing Investigation
The vehicle not only struck dozens of people but also demolished a taco stand and the valet podium, suggesting the impact was forceful and possibly intentional. Police have not confirmed whether the act was a deliberate assault or an accident, but say all scenarios are being considered.
“This will be a comprehensive investigation involving multiple units,” VanGerpen said. The LAPD is working to determine whether the driver acted alone, whether he was impaired, and what led up to the crash.
Community in Shock
The incident has rattled the neighborhood, known for its nightlife and entertainment venues. Local businesses remained closed throughout Saturday as investigators combed the area for evidence.
Authorities are urging anyone with footage or information to come forward, particularly regarding the identity of the shooter who fled the scene.
