Second Targeted Incident in Recent Years Raises Security Concerns

THE HAGUE – The International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed that it was the target of a “sophisticated and targeted” cyberattack late last week — the second such breach in recent years. The incident was swiftly detected and contained, the Court said in a public statement on Monday.

Court-Wide Investigation Underway

According to ICC officials, the Court’s cybersecurity alert and response mechanisms played a critical role in identifying and isolating the breach before further damage could occur. A Court-wide impact analysis is currently underway to determine the scope and consequences of the attack.

“Steps are already being taken to mitigate any effects,” the statement read, emphasizing that the integrity of the Court’s operations remains intact.

Transparency and Accountability to Member States

The ICC stated that informing the public and its 124 States Parties about the breach is essential. It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing such incidents.

Call for Continued Support Amid Cyber Threats

The Court urged its member states and the international community to continue their support, especially as digital threats become more complex and frequent.

“Such support ensures the Court’s capacity to implement its critical mandate of justice and accountability,” the ICC noted, calling cyber resilience a “shared responsibility”.
