Torrential Rains Submerge Major Roads in Karachi
Karachi, Pakistan’s largest metropolitan city, was battered by heavy monsoon rains on Tuesday, leading to severe urban flooding and widespread traffic disruptions. The downpour submerged key city roads, triggered power outages, and caused immense difficulties for commuters across multiple districts.
PMD Rainfall Report: Gulshan-i-Hadeed Receives 145mm
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), intense rainfall was recorded across Karachi. By 5 pm, Gulshan-i-Hadeed received the highest rainfall at 145mm, followed by Airport Old Area (138mm), Keamari (137mm), Jinnah Terminal (135mm), and University Road (132mm). Other areas including DHA Phase VII (121mm), PAF Base Faisal (114mm), Surjani Town (111.2mm), and North Karachi (108.4mm) also witnessed significant showers.
Karachi Traffic Disrupted by Flooded Roads
The Karachi Traffic Police reported major slowdowns and traffic jams on arterial roads. Commuters faced severe gridlocks on MA Jinnah Road, II Chundrigar Road, University Road, Liaquat Highway, National Highway, and Jinnah Avenue Road. Citizens were advised to avoid sudden braking, drive slowly, and maintain safe distances to prevent accidents on slippery, waterlogged roads.
Government and PDMA on High Alert
Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah directed all district administrations, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Rescue 1122, and the health department to remain on high alert. He instructed immediate drainage of rainwater and ordered deputy commissioners to personally supervise relief work in the field.
Power Outages Across Karachi
K-Electric confirmed that nearly 1,340 out of 2,100 feeders were active during the rainfall. However, temporary shutdowns were enforced in low-lying and encroached areas for safety reasons. Restoration efforts in waterlogged neighborhoods were delayed until conditions became safe.
PMD Forecast: More Heavy Rain Expected
The PMD has forecasted continuous rain with heavy falls in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, and Tharparkar from August 19–22, 2025. Officials warned of urban flooding in Sindh and possible flash floods in Balochistan, urging authorities to remain vigilant.
Emergency Measures by Sindh Government
A day earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired an emergency meeting, directing local bodies, traffic police, and disaster management authorities to stay prepared for rapid response during the heavy monsoon spell.
