Palmer Scores Early, Estevao Equalises, Giay’s Deflection Seals It for Blues

PHILADELPHIA – Chelsea secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Palmeiras on Friday night in the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals, thanks to a late own goal involving Palmeiras defender Agustin Giay, propelling the Premier League side into the semifinals.

The decisive moment came in the final minutes when a low cross from Chelsea’s Malo Gusto deflected off Richard Rios and Giay before slipping past goalkeeper Weverton into the net, sealing the victory.

Palmer Opens Scoring, Estevao Stuns Chelsea

Cole Palmer put Chelsea ahead in the 16th minute, collecting a pass from Trevoh Chalobah and beating two defenders with a left-footed strike from just outside the box. The goal silenced critics who had questioned his end product despite leading the team in shots throughout the tournament.

“I’ve been working on that shot in training,” Palmer said post-match. “The manager told us to stay calm, keep passing, and we’d be fine.”

Palmeiras, however, responded in style. In the 53rd minute, Estevao, the 17-year-old Brazilian prodigy who has already agreed to join Chelsea next year, scored from a tight angle past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to make it 1-1.

Irony and Relief for Chelsea as Estevao Impresses

Chelsea fans had mixed emotions as the equaliser came from a future Blues player. Estevao, who officially joins the club after turning 18 in April 2025, was a standout performer and showcased the talent that prompted Chelsea to secure his signature early.

Next Match: Chelsea vs Fluminense

Chelsea will face Fluminense in the semifinals on Tuesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Brazilian side booked their place earlier on Friday with a 2-1 win over Al Hilal.
