British Star Storms Into Quarter-Finals; Reid Advances After Thriller

British wheelchair tennis ace Alfie Hewett has opened his Wimbledon title defence with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi, securing his place in the quarter-finals in just 54 minutes on Court Three.

Hewett, the reigning Wimbledon singles champion, claimed his first singles title at SW19 last year, completing a historic career Grand Slam. The 27-year-old, currently seeded second, showed no signs of pressure as he dispatched Caverzaschi with powerful groundstrokes and clinical serving.

Next, Hewett will face China’s Ji Zhenxu in the quarter-finals, as he continues his pursuit of a second consecutive Wimbledon title. A much-anticipated showdown with longtime doubles partner Gordon Reid will only be possible if both men reach the final.

Gordon Reid Survives Scare in Opening Round

Reid, also a British tennis legend, was pushed to the limit in his first-round clash against Belgium’s Joachim Gerard. The match went the distance, with Reid recovering from a set down to win 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (10-6) in a dramatic encounter.

Reid now faces a tough test in the quarter-finals against Gustavo Fernandez, the fourth seed from Argentina, who is known for his aggressive style and past Grand Slam success.

Hewett and Reid Eyeing Doubles Hat-Trick

While both players are focused on their singles campaigns, Wednesday will also see them reunite as a doubles pair. Together, Hewett and Reid have formed one of the most formidable partnerships in wheelchair tennis, and they are bidding for their third consecutive Wimbledon doubles title.

The British duo boasts 22 Grand Slam doubles titles together and remains one of the tournament favourites in the doubles draw.

Dahnon Ward Exits in First Round

It wasn’t a successful day for all the British players, however. Wildcard entry Dahnon Ward was ousted in straight sets by Spanish third seed Martin de la Puente, who dominated the match 6-2, 6-0.

Despite the early exit, Ward’s inclusion in the main draw marks another important step in his development as a rising talent in British wheelchair tennis.
