Firm unveils carbon-absorbing eco-bricks designed to reduce emissions and promote sustainable building.

A Sheffield-based start-up, earth4Earth, has introduced innovative eco-friendly bricks that absorb and store carbon dioxide permanently. These new bricks not only pull greenhouse gases from the surrounding air but are also made through a carbon-free production process.

Developed at Sheffield Technology Parks, the bricks are now being tested in pilot construction projects across the city. Co-founder Theodore Hanein expressed excitement over the bricks’ potential to support net-zero construction and contribute to planetary restoration.

The production process uses soil from construction sites—material that would typically go to landfill—and mixes it with a specially developed binder to increase strength. Unlike traditional methods that heat limestone at around 1,000°C and emit carbon dioxide, earth4Earth’s binder is made at room temperature, locking carbon in solid form rather than releasing it as gas.

Support manager Anna Simmons added that the bricks are fully recyclable; they can be crushed and reused to make new bricks or as fertiliser in soil. Currently manufactured in Wuhan, China, the company plans to shift production to the UK next year to further reduce its environmental impact.

John Grant, a climate and sustainability expert at Sheffield Hallam University, emphasized the importance of reducing the construction industry’s carbon footprint. He praised the concept of low-carbon bricks but noted the importance of proving their strength and durability. He also highlighted the need for a wide range of technologies to transform the construction sector into a more sustainable one.
