Instagram Introduces New Reels Performance Metrics with Retention Chart and Skip Rate

Instagram Enhances Reels Insights for Creators

Instagram has rolled out new performance metrics for Reels, giving creators more powerful tools to track audience engagement and improve content strategies. The update introduces two major features — a Retention chart and a Skip Rate metric — designed to help creators better understand viewer behavior.

Retention Chart: Tracking Audience Drop-Offs

The new Retention chart shows the percentage of viewers who remain engaged throughout the reel. This allows creators to identify the exact points where viewers lose interest, enabling them to refine video pacing, hooks, and storytelling techniques.

Instagram clarified that while most charts will show a natural decline, a flatter retention curve reflects stronger engagement and higher-quality content that keeps viewers watching.

Skip Rate Replaces View Rate

Alongside the retention tool, Instagram is replacing the old View Rate metric with Skip Rate. Unlike View Rate — which only measured how many viewers watched past the first three seconds — the Skip Rate reveals how many users exited before the three-second mark.

This change provides a more accurate measure of how effective a reel’s opening seconds are in capturing attention, a critical factor in maximizing reach and engagement.

Empowering Creators with Data-Driven Insights

These new features are part of Instagram’s broader effort to improve its Insights tab, giving creators and businesses deeper analytics to optimize their strategies. With clearer visibility into retention and skips, content makers can now adjust their formats, hooks, and storytelling methods to improve performance.

Rollout Timeline

Instagram confirmed that the new Reels performance metrics will roll out in the coming weeks, making them available globally for creators and businesses.
