Meta Finds Ideal Comfort Duration for Quest VR Headset Use

Meta has identified a specific time window during which wearing its Quest VR headsets remains comfortable—beyond that, users may start to feel discomfort. The company’s latest ergonomic research pinpoints this “Goldilocks zone” for VR usage at 23 to 25 minutes, which is shorter than many expected. This timeframe offers the best balance between immersive experience and physical comfort, especially as users seek lighter and more wearable headsets.

Defining the Comfort Zone
This optimal duration was established through human factor studies, where participants reported when the headset started to feel too heavy or uncomfortable. Surprisingly, many users reached this point before the 30-minute mark—Meta’s original baseline for testing. Engineers now believe 30-minute sessions overestimate what most users can tolerate comfortably, particularly with newer, sleeker designs.

Designing Around Comfort
In response, Meta’s industrial design team is incorporating this 23–25 minute benchmark into future headset development. Factors like weight distribution, materials, and visual balance will be refined to optimize short-session use.
